Leo had hoped their game with St. Rita would be a huge first step towards them becoming a Catholic League powerhouse.

Unfortunately, it didn’t work out that way.

The Mustangs beat the Lions, 45- 6 at rainy Gately Stadium Saturday.

The loss was the first of the season for Leo, which dropped to 2-1. St. Rita, meanwhile, improved to 3- 0.

Despite the lopsided loss, Leo gave it their best shot. They kept the ball on the game’s opening possession for nearly nine minutes but couldn’t get into the end zone.

The Mustangs finally got it going in the second quarter taking the lead on a touchdown run by running back Dave Marciano. They increased the lead to 23-0 at halftime on a pair of touchdown passes by quarterback Lawrence Garrett.

The Lions finally lit the scoreboard in the third quarter on a touchdown pass from quarterback Darwin Rogers to Paul Beene.

The game set the stage for St. Rita’s Catholic League showdown at Pat Cronin Field Friday night against Mt. Carmel, which suffered its first loss of the season falling to Providence St. Mel.

In other Catholic League play, De La Salle improved its record to 2-1, rolling to a 52-0 win over Hales Franciscan.

Mark Harper led the way for the Meteors rushing for 193 yards, all in the first half.

In addition to the Mt. Carmel-St Rita showdown Friday, other Catholic League action this weekend will find Leo with another tough test when they host Brother Rice Saturday. Hales Franciscan hosts De La Salle Sunday.

In action involving Public League teams, Morgan Park saw its record drop to 1-2 with a 29-21 setback at Bolingbrook.

In Public Leauge action this week, Corliss hosts Fenger and Julian tangles with Hubbard in a Gately twin bill Thursday.

Conference play gets underway this week in the Public League. On Friday, Morgan Park returns to host CVS while on Saturday, Simeon tangles with Dunbar in Prairie State Conference play. In Land of Lincoln Conference play, Marshall hosts Harper, and Robeson bangs helmets with King.

In the Red Bird Conference, Whitney Young takes on South Shore.
