Southern University quarterback Bryant Lee has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Pre- Season Offensive Player of the Year.

The announcement was made at the conference’s media day in Birmingham.

Named as the SWAC Pre-Season Defensive Player of the year was Prairie View linebacker Zach East.

A 6-2, 195-pound junior, Lee directed a Southern offense last season that finished first in the conference in passing offense and second in the conference in total offense. Lee threw 2,326 yards and 23 touchdowns in ten games.

East, a 6-1, 240-pound junior, finished the 2007 season with 127 total tackles while being named the SWAC Defensive Player of the Year.

In other Black college football news: Trent Boykin has been named as the new head football coach at Lane College in Jackson, Tenn.

Boykin replaces Dearrion Snead, who had been named as the Dragons head coach just three months ago.

Snead and assistant coach Leon Gray, Jr. were reportedly fired after a “deliberate alteration” of a student transfer document.

Boykin has 16 years of coaching experience, including stops at Division-I programs Boston College, Ball State and Akron as well as his alma mater and Division I-AA powerhouse Youngstown State.

“I have got a chance to do everything from NAIA to big-time Division I,” Boykin said. “I have a lot of great mentors that I can call upon to talk to. I know I will need some advice, so I will be calling them and talking to them this season.”

The 2008 SWAC new football coaches this season are Ernest Jones at Alcorn State, Monte Coleman at Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Johnny Cole at Texas Southern.
