SHAWNEETOWN, Ill. — Federal prosecutors contend the longtime sheriff of Gallatin County in southeastern Illinois sold marijuana, often while on duty. Raymond Martin was arrested Monday and made an initial court appearance on three counts of marijuana distribution and two counts of carrying a firearm while trafficking drugs. Martin has been sheriff since 1990. The complaint accuses the 46-year-old sheriff of distributing more than 1,100 grams of marijuana between April 27 and May 11. A judge has appointed a federal public defender for Martin. She hasn’t returned a message left for her Tuesday seeking comment. A woman who answered Martin’s home phone Tuesday said Martin had no comment. He’s scheduled for a detention hearing Wednesday. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
