For the second time in three months, several Black-owned Popeyes restaurants on the South Side have closed, reportedly for financial reasons. Since June 5, the following Popeyes have been closed: 346 E. 95th St., 5401 S. Halsted St., 5541 S. Wentworth Ave., 111 W. 75th St., 818 E. 47th St., 7430 S. Stony Island Ave., and 300 E. 35th St. David Cole, district manager for the THG Restaurant Group LLC, which operates the affected Popeyes restaurants, did not return phone calls. However, Alicia Thompson, a spokeswoman for Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, parent company of the Popeyes franchise, confirmed the closings and said it is working with the owner to reopen the restaurants. “Popeyes is committed to the Chicago market and is actively working to ensure the restaurants will reopen in the near future,” she said. “It is our policy to not comment specifically on the business concerns of our franchise operators.” In March, the same Popeyes restaurants–excluding the Stony Island location–abruptly closed without notice for two weeks. And Popeyes at 7617 S. Racine Ave., which was among the seven sites that closed in March, is still open. ______ Copyright 2009 Chicago Defender. All rights reserved.
