South Side Man Charged in Police Involved Shooting

A 23-year-old man has been charged in connection with a police-involved shooting.
Neven Woods, of the 8900 block of S. Cottage Grove Ave., has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault of peace officer w/firearm, one count of UUW by felon – possess/use firearm on parole, one count of possess firearm with deface serial number, and one count of armed habitual criminal.
Woods was charged after Englewood (007th) District officers were on patrol at about 9 p.m. July 5 in the area of the 7000 block of South Hermitage, when they observed a group of men standing on a front porch consuming alcohol. As officers approached to conduct a field interview, Woods fled on foot resulting in a foot pursuit.
During the pursuit, Woods reached for a gun in his waistband, continued to flee into an alley, and then turned and pointed his weapon at an officer, according to police. As a result, the officer discharged his weapon striking Woods.
Woods was struck and transported to an area hospital, police said. His weapon was recovered at the scene and there were no reported injuries to officers.
