It’s that time of year again! The perfect time for serious art collectors, burgeoning art collectors and those who want to invest in the history of Black Chicago to gather. The historic South Side Community Art Center presents their 51st Annual Art Auction.

The center, located at 3831 S. Michigan, is one of the last surviving art centers of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The government at the time guaranteed operational monies for an art center if, and only if, the community could buy a building. Under the steel determination of Margaret Burroughs, a challenge went out to the community to do for self, if only a dime at a time. And the community responded over and over again. The building was purchased in 1940 with the official opening in 1941.

In its 75 years in operation, the South Side Community Art Center has been home to many nationally recognized artists, including Dr. Margaret Burroughs, Richard Hunt, Archibald Motley, Eldzier Cortor, Bernard Goss, Charles White, William Carter, Joseph Kersey and Gordon Parks. It continues to be a place of welcome to the artists of today like Martha Wade and Joyce Owens who both will be honored at this year’s auction.

The honorary chairs for the 51st Annual Art Auction are Amina Dickerson, Dickerson Global Advisors, Veranda Dickens, Seaway Bank and Trust, and Phillip Scott, NYCH Gallery. The 51st Annual Art Auction, will be held Saturday, May 21, 2016 at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) MacLean Ballroom, 112 South Michigan Avenue from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m.  Monies raised at the auction enables the SSCAC to continue its mission of preserving, conserving and promoting African American art. The auctioneer for this year’s auction is the Chicago Defender’s very own Arts Critic, Candace Hunter. Tickets are $75.00 and include a year long membership to SSCAC as well as a dinner buffet and been/wine/soda. LeeAnn Trotter of NBC 5 Chicago will be emceeing the event.

Over its 75-year existence, SSCAC’s role and mission remains relevant and vital. The Center stands as a cultural icon in the city of Chicago and a sustaining symbol of endurance in the community. Tickets may be bought directly at the center, 3831 S. Michigan Avenue, Chicago or by calling 77.373.1026.
