South Carolina St. tops Hampton 57-56

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Jimmy Williams scored 12 points, and South Carolina State defeated Hampton 57-56 in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament on Wednesday night.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Jimmy Williams scored 12 points, and South Carolina State defeated Hampton 57-56 in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament on Wednesday night.

In a tightly contested second half, the second-seeded Bulldogs (17-13) led 57-54 before Hampton hit two free throws with 2:01 left. Brandon Tunnell had a chance to give Hampton (16-16) the win but missed a 15-foot jump shot as time expired.

With the win, the Bulldogs advanced to Friday’s semifinals against the winner of Thursday’s Norfolk-Bethune-Cookman matchup.

The Bulldogs trailed by nine early but rallied for a 29-25 advantage at halftime. The Pirates stayed close for most of the second half.

Josh Jackson scored 11 points and Carrio Bennett added 10 for the Bulldogs.

Vincent Simpson led the seventh-seeded Pirates with 22 points.
