President Obama’s efforts to garner more people to enroll in his healthcare plan took a turn to the extreme with “Saturday Night Live’s” redo of Obama’s appearance with Zach Galifianakis on “Between Two Ferns.”
The show’s cold open spoofed the humorous interview between the “Hangover” star and Obama as the president (played by Jay Pharoah) passionately kissed Justin Bieber (played by Kate McKinnon) in a last minute effort to boost healthcare enrollment. Pharaoh’s “Obama” pulled out all the stops in the sketch by being photographed in Pharrell Williams’ infamous hat, as well as with Kim Kardashian, One Direction’s Harry Styles and Bat Kid.
To cap it off, “Pope Francis” stops by drum up support among youth by doing the popular “Nae Nae” dance with “Obama.” The outrageous ideas to create a surge of interest in Healthcare.gov following the commander-in-chief’s appearance on “Between Two Ferns” were pitched by a social media expert played by Noel Wells.
“SNL”’s parody comes amid news reports that the administration will probably reach it’s goal of 7 million Americans signing up for Obamacare despite opposition from conservatives. Although the deadline to enroll for coverage is today (March 31), applications for millions of people who have already begun the process by that date but have had trouble signing up must be received by April 7.
“The Affordable Care Act is working,” House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi emphasized in a statement. “Republicans should abandon their reckless pursuit of new milestones in the number of votes to repeal or undermine this historic law.”
