Slaughter encourages Chicagoans to get winter heating assistance program

Slaughter Encourages Residents to Apply for Winter Heating Assistance Program

CHICAGO – With the winter season nearly in full-swing, state Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, is strongly urging residents to apply for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which offers financial assistance to help cover utility services for families in need.

“No one should be forced to choose between keeping food on the table and paying for their utilities,” said Slaughter. “In order to build a stronger Illinois, we need to make sure residents in our community have access to cost-saving resources that help them maintain a better quality of life”

Slaughter is encouraging residents in need to apply for LIHEAP, which offers assistance to families by helping subsidize their winter heating bills in Illinois. The 2019-2020 application period is currently open, and applications are being accepted until funding is exhausted. Those interested in applying can visit LIHEAPIllinois.com or call the state’s toll-free LIHEAP hotline at 877-411-WARM (877-411-9276) for information on income eligibility and the application process.

“I strongly urge all residents to apply for this cost-saving and potentially life-saving assistance program,” Slaughter said. “Folks in our community have enough matters on their minds with the usual grind of the holiday season, and worrying about whether or not they can afford utility services should not be one of them.”
