Six-Time Felon Faces 15 Attempted Murder Charges Over Mass Shooting

The person who allegedly carried out a mass shooting at a North Lawndale Halloween party early Sunday morning has been arrested and remains detained.

William Groves, a 48-year-old, six-time felon, is being accused of opening fire into a crowd of people at the party, injuring six women and nine men between the ages of 26 and 53.

According to multiple reports, the suspected shooter acted out of retaliation when he was asked to leave the party before returning and opening fire.

At his pre-trial detention hearing held on Tuesday, Groves, who has a history of arrests and convictions dating back to when he was 19, is now charged with 32 felonies, including 15 counts of attempted murder and 15 counts of aggravated battery and discharge of a firearm. He is also being charged with unlawful use of a weapon due to his felon status and aggravated discharge of a firearm in an occupied building.

Prosecutors convinced a Cook County judge that Groves is a danger to society. Therefore, he remains in lockup.

Police continue to investigate how he obtained the firearm and whether there were any additional shooters. Groves is scheduled to return to court on Nov. 13.
