Less than one hour after the Chicago Police Department released its preliminary crime statistics for February, including stating there were four fewer homicides from January to February –– 50 –– compared to the same period last year, a South Side man was fatally shot during a police-involved shooting. The man, one of six shot during three separate incidents since Friday, was shot by police after he drove the wrong way down a one-way street in the 6700 block of South Cornell Avenue, police said. Police said the man brandished a gun after stopping and exiting his vehicle, and officers responded with gunfire. The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting. Later on Friday, tragedy struck the Southeast Side for the second time in the last two weeks. Carnell Pitts, 18, was gunned down at around 11:30 p.m. in the 3200 block of East 92nd Street after attending a party. Police said an apparent verbal altercation led to Pitts being shot in the back. The 18-year-old is the brother of Kendrick Pitts, 17, who was one of three teens slain on Feb. 20 near 87th Street and Exchange Avenue. Tyrese Castleberry, 17, and a 15-year-old boy were charged Sunday with Carnell Pitts’ murder. On Saturday, four people who were standing on a porch in the 4900 block of South Princeton Avenue were shot shortly before 1 a.m. during an apparent drive-by shooting. Police said it appeared the victims were attending a party at the location when a white Chevrolet Lumina rode by and someone in the car opened fire. None of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries, police said. Shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday on the West Side, a man was found fatally stabbed in the 500 block of North Central Avenue.
