CARBONDALE, Ill. — Worries about swine flu are prompting Southern Illinois University in Carbondale to ban travel it sponsors to Mexico. SIU spokesman Rod Sievers (SEE’-verz) says university officials decided last week to stop research or educational travel by students or faculty to the country where the flu has been said to originate. The chancellor’s office agreed to the recommendation of a campus hazards task force. The school can’t forbid people to travel. But it won’t offer payment or reimbursement for such trips while the ban is in effect. Sievers says he doesn’t know how many research projects may be affected. The outbreak has killed 26 people in Mexico and one in the U.S. That victim was a toddler who died in Texas. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
