EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — A police officer at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville is being credited with helping save two residents from an apartment fire. Edwardsville Fire Chief J. Brian Wilson Sr. says Officer Dan Murray spotted smoke and flames coming out of the roof of one of the apartment complex’s buildings. Wilson says Murray checked all of the units and found two people sleeping, then helped evacuate them. Fire officials say smoke detectors didn’t go off because storms had knocked out power to the smoke alarms since 4 p.m. Sunday. Power still was out when firefighters left the scene at 4 a.m. Monday. Most of the apartments were vacant because of summer recess. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
