Just before R&B recording artist Beyonce took to the stage at the United Center July 17 as part of her “I AM…” Tour and showed off why she catapulted to entertainment stardom, she offered a peek at her humanitarian side, hosting a special event that supported a local food bank.
Dozens of fans, media and the Chicago Children’s Choir gathered outside of the United Center just before the concert, as Beyonce talked about how she got involved with the Show Your Helping Hand campaign, through a partnership she forged with General Mills’ Hamburger Helper brand, to help feed hungry Americans.
“Beyonce’s fans across the country have been very generous and key in the fight against hunger in America,” Beth Brady, vice president of General Mills, said at the pre-concert event.
Feeding America President and CEO Vicki Escarra said Beyonce’s involvement in feeding the hungry was genuine and “not a fly by night commitment.”
Feeding America, formerly known as Second Harvest, is a national hunger-relief charity with 200 food banks in its network. Collectively, Feeding America and its network says it serves millions of people each year, including nine million children and three million senior citizens.
