Simeon, Young set for showdown

Clash of the Titans. Showdown on the South Side. Battle of the Best. Whatever it’s called, today’s Public League baseball game between Simeon and Whitney Young is definitely the game of the season for both the Wolverines and Dolphins, respectively. First

“Whitney Young is the defending city champion and you can’t get much better than that.” In the first Jackie Robinson Conference meeting between the two earlier this season, Whitney Young pulled out a 3-1 home victory.

This time, the game will be played at Simeon. “Playing at home is always a big advantage in the game of baseball,” Franklin said. “Every field is different and at home you get the last at bat of the game. “Hopefully it will benefit us.”

Whitney Young is keyed by the pitching of Jake Cinoman and Nathan Kamin along with the bats of catcher Julian Kenner, third baseman Troy Smith and outfielder Eric Tabb. Catcher Johnny “Campy” Dorsey, infielder Steve Florence and pitchers Michael McSmith and Troy Williams, meanwhile, pace Simeon.

The game will also be a match between the two top teams in the weekly Public League baseball poll with Young holding down the top spot and Simeon second. Lake View remains in third, Lane Tech fourth and Clemente fifth. Sixth place belongs to the Panthers of Von Steuben while Jones College Prep is seventh, Kenwood eighth, Taft ninth and Hyde Park tenth.
