Former Commissioner of the Cook County Board of Review Robert Shaw has formed an exploratory committee to gauge the viability of a run for Cook County Assessor. Announced Thursday in south suburban Dolton, Shaw answered the call of many community and civic leaders to consider running for the seat currently held by Jim Houlihan. Shaw, who currently serves as the Inspector General for the Village of Dolton, has served over five decades as a public official. He began his political career in 1979 as alderman of the 9th Ward on the South Side. Nearly 20 years later, he was elected as commissioner of the Cook County Board of Review. In that capacity, Shaw was referred to as the “Reduction Commissioner.” If elected as assessor, Shaw will make history as the first African-American Cook County Assessor. ______ Copyright 2009 Chicago Defender.
