DURHAM, NC- The Shaw University Bears captured the second consecutive CIAA Football Championship with a 36-7 victory over Elizabeth City State University at Durham County Stadium.
The Bears’ defense, which ranks #1 in NCAA Division II stayed true to form holding ECSU to just 238 yards of total offense (126 on the ground). Additionally ECSU (7-4) was also held scoreless in the second half for the first time in this season, and their seven points were the fewest since they dropped a 15-7 decision to Wingate on September 20th.
Just the opposite for the Bears offensively, Shaw (8-3) rolled up 410 yards on 71 plays. Travis Robinson made the most of his protection amassing 209 yards through the air on 16-33 passing with three touchdowns.
The Vikings’ only score of the day came with 14:02 remaining in the first half, a 28-yard touchdown pass from Curtis Rich, Jr. to Dexter Manley.
After holding a 13-7 lead at the intermission, the Bears scored two touchdowns and added a 27-yard field goal in the third quarter to break the game open. Their final score of the day, a 21-yard strike from Robinson to James Pettway, came with 10:32 left in the game.
ECSU’s game MVP was Rod Jones who finished his last collegiate game with 9 tackles, a fumble recovery and two pass breakups. AP
