Ida B. Wells was regarded as a champion of anti-lynching. Her work led her to help found investigative journalism, especially in the Black Press. Daisy Bates started the Arkansas State Press with her husband in the 1940s. The paper became the largest and most influential Black paper in the state. Hazel Garland was one of the first Black women to edit a nationally circulated publication. She served as editor of The Pittsburgh Courier in the 1970s. Carole Simpson is a highly esteemed and prized network broadcast journalist. She is credited with blazing the trail for a number of Black women journalists.
