A settlement in a class-action lawsuit is being hailed as a historic move forward for adults with developmental disabilities in Illinois. The state has agreed to help adults with mental retardation and other disabilities move out of institutions. Those living at home with parents will also get help. The state must provide services that make it possible for them to live more independently. The state has six years to accomplish what’s called a monumental task by both sides. Tom Green of the Illinois Department of Human Services says, however, that no one will be forced out of an institution. Attorney John Grossbart represents the plaintiffs and says more than 6,000 adults living in institutions will benefit. The agreement must be approved by a judge.
