BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A judge has delayed sentencing at least a month for an Alabama man who pleaded guilty earlier to trying to hire a Ku Klux Klan hitman to kill a black neighbor.
U.S. District Judge Karon Bowdre said sentencing originally planned Thursday for Allen Wayne Morgan will be delayed to allow the government to review an expert report submitted by the defense.
Morgan’s attorneys say he shouldn’t spend more than five years behind bars. They described the 30-year-old Munford man as a drug-addicted veteran of more than 175 Iraq combat missions who had suffered severe mental problems.
Prosecutors sought a sentence double that. The government says Morgan tried his best last year to hire a supposed KKK member to kill a black neighbor he suspected of having sex with his wife.
