Saief John Sengstacke, great-grand nephew of the Chicago Defender’s founder Robert Sengstacke Abbott died Friday at Mercy Hospital. He was 35.

Sengstacke, one of six born to renowned photographer Robert Abbott Sengstacke and Veela Sengstacke Gonzales on Aug. 17, 1973 in Chicago, spent most of his life on the East Coast. He graduated from Teaneck High School and attended Rutgers University, both in New Jersey.

He was enthusiastic about technology but left college early to pursue his interest in the computer industry where he found extreme gratification. He excelled in his trade. He also enjoyed the culinary arts and the fashion industry, his father said.

After attending Rutgers he moved to New York, his sister Myiti Sengstacke, said.

Saief’s family remembers his love for food and his healthy appetite. His father recalls times when Saief “could pile up a plate, polish it off and go back for seconds. His appetite for the culinary arts is reflective of his appetite for life.”
