Senator: Many DC voucher students unaccounted for

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin says the federal government paid for more than 1,700 D.C. students to attend private schools but doesn’t know what schools more than a fifth of them attended.

The Illinois Democrat made the accusation about the $12 million voucher program at a subcommittee hearing Wednesday.

The group that oversees the D.C. voucher program declined to give Durbin enrollment information, so he asked the 49 participating private schools how many voucher students they each had last year.

All but five schools responded, but the numbers added up to only 1,334 students.

Gregory M. Cork, president and chief executive of the Washington Scholarship Fund, says he will give Durbin enrollment data and try to resolve the discrepancies in the numbers.
