MONROVIA, Liberia — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has arrived in the conflict-shattered country of Liberia to show the Obama administration’s support for Africa’s first democratically elected female leader, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Clinton was meeting Thursday in the Liberian capital of Monrovia with Sirleaf and other top officials and lawmakers to reaffirm U.S. backing for the recovery of the country that was embroiled by back-to-back civil wars from 1989 to 2003. Liberia has historically close ties with the United States. It was founded in 1847 by freed American slaves. Clinton is on the sixth leg of a seven-nation tour of Africa aimed at promoting democracy and development. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
