Second person charged in Chatham mass slaying

Another man was charged late Wednesday in the April mass murders in a South Side residence.

Arthur Brown, 25, of the 3700 block of Lake Street in Lansing, was charged with killing five peopleûûAnthony Scales, Lakesha Doss, Whitney Flowers, Donovan Richardson and Reginald Walkerûûduring an April 23 robbery in a home in the 7600 block of South Rhodes Avenue, authorities said. Brown, along with 22-year-old Torolan Williams, who was charged last month, each face five counts of first-degree murder and armed robbery, and one count of home invasion. The victims, three men and two women, were shot to death between 11:30 p.m., April 22, and 3 p.m. the next day, Chicago police Chief of Detectives Thomas Byrne said after Williams was charged June 11. Byrne said robbery was the motive, and there was no forced entry. The home was ransacked and several high-end electronic items and jewelry were taken from the home, the work of more than one person, police believe. Williams’ arrest came after police received a tip that he talked about the murders while at a gas station. Undisclosed items were seized from his Morgan Park home, and his own testimony at a grand jury led to the charges, Det. Tom Murphy said. Police said the investigation remains open. The mass homicide is the second incident of its kind in the last decade. In 2003, a man killed six people in an auto parts warehouse on the South Side. He was killed during a shoot-out with police. Brown is scheduled to appear in bond court July 3. ______ Copyright 2008 Chicago Defender. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
