Scholarships and grants were awarded recently to a few of Columbia College students and a non-profit organization during a hair showcase extravaganza.
Three students in the Conaway Achievement Project at Columbia received $1,500 scholarships each and Deborah’s Place, a non-profit providing housing and support services to homeless women, was awarded a $1,500 grant.
“I give all honor to God because I really trust Him in everything I do and I believe that even something like this scholarship is a blessing from him,” said scholarship recipient Aaja Carr.
Carr, an arts/entertainment and media management major plans to move to New York after graduation to purse a career as a fashion stylist.
The Sensationnel Hair show, choreographed by Yoshimi of YK Management and held at the Sheraton Hotel Chicago last month, featured three of the city’s cosmetology schools –– Capri Beauty College, Ms. Roberts Beauty Academy and Dudley Beauty College. The schools each received $500 grants.
The show’s marketing programming director said the theme, “Business with a Hope.”
“We always give back to the community,” said David Williams, programming director.
M.A.D.D. Rhythms, a hip hop dance group, The Industries dance group, songstress Shirley Murdock and Terrell Carter, who appeared in Tyler Perry’s films, performed.
