Roosevelt University plans to establish a college of pharmacy at its Schaumburg campus, offering classes as soon as fall of 2011. George MacKinnon III, dean of the new school, says its first class is expected to have 65 students. Employment experts say that as the nation’s population ages and the medical system relies more heavily on prescription drugs, pharmacology has become an in-demand and lucrative field. The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that pharmacy positions will increase by 22 percent between 2006 and 2016, a growth rate that it says yields excellent job prospects. Michael Patton, executive director of the Illinois Pharmacists Association, says graduates in the field can frequently walk into jobs paying $100,000-plus, not counting signing bonuses and student loan repayments. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press.
