NEW ORLEANS, La. — State Rep. Cedric Richmond of New Orleans says he’ll run for Congress next year. Richmond announced Tuesday that he’ll seek the 2nd District post now held by Joseph Cao (Gow). Cao is a Republican and the first Vietnamese member of Congress. He defeated Rep. William Jefferson last year after Jefferson was indicted on corruption charges. The New Orleans-based district is mostly Democratic and mostly Black. Cao has come under strong criticism there for his vote against President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus plan. Cao says the plan was too expensive and did little for the district. State Rep. Juan LaFonta of New Orleans also has said he will run for the seat next year. Lafonta and Richmond are both African-American Democrats. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
