RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Richmond parking lot’s asphalt is being removed as the city attempts to pay homage to the slaves and free blacks who are buried there.
A ceremony is scheduled Tuesday in the city’s historic Shockoe Bottom district, where the burial ground is being reclaimed.
A portion of the burial ground lies beneath the parking lot, which is being transferred from Virginia Commonwealth University to the city of Richmond.
The transfer was made possible by a $3.3 million state budget amendment.
Contractors have donated their services to remove asphalt and gravel.
