Do you really think that black discontent with the Academy Awards began with Jada Pinkett Smith or Spike Lee? Or that it evoked such a passionate backlash last decade?
This is what made legendary comedian Richard Pryor such an invaluable national treasure. He was able to hone in on scurrilous cultural and racial inequities and wrap them in his special brand of comedy in order to impact society in ways that not even the most militant of groups were not able to.
During the 1977 Oscars, Pryor in his prime gave voice to blatant black omission from the Academy Awards nominations process. His bit begins at about the 15 minute mark. Take a look:
