TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — The Tuscaloosa City Council approved a settlement with the city’s first black police officer, ending a 36-year legal battle over his pension.
Willie Bies Jr. will receive $469,124.52 over three years.
The settlement states that despite a court ruling that Bies wasn’t legally enrolled in the city’s pension plan, he and his attorney, Lee Loder, have been trying to find a resolution that reflects Bies’ service to the city.
Bies retired from the Tuscaloosa Police Department in 1991. The settlement represents the city’s share of what it would have had to contribute to Bies’ pension had he been enrolled in its fire and police pension plan.
