Report: More Illinoisans refusing Breathalyzers

More Illinoisans are refusing to take Breathalyzer tests when stopped on suspicion of drunk driving.

More Illinoisans are refusing to take Breathalyzer tests when stopped on suspicion of drunk driving. A Chicago newspaper cites state statistics showing that around 40 percent of people arrested in drunken driving cases refused to submit to the tests in 2007. The percentage of refusals has increased every year since 2001. Susan McKeigue of Mothers Against Drunk Driving Illinois blames attorneys who tell clients not to take the tests as a way to potentially beat the system. One defense attorney, Don Ramsell, says he’s among those who believe Breathalyzer test results can have up to a 25 percent margin of error. So he questions why people should submit to them. But prosecutors and police defend the devices as accurate and reliable. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
