Report: Chicago health dept. lags on improvements

A report says the Chicago Department of Public Health has failed to improve management of its inventory of pharmacy goods such as vaccines and drugs.

CHICAGO (AP) — A report says the Chicago Department of Public Health has failed to improve management of its inventory of pharmacy goods such as vaccines and drugs.

The City of Chicago Inspector General’s office released the report Thursday. It’s a follow-up to a 2009 audit that showed problems at the health department’s warehouse.

The warehouse is now closed. Health department clinics now order and store their own inventory. The inspector general recommends that policies be written to address inventory tracking at the clinics.

The inspector general will conduct a second follow-up in the coming months.

The report notes Dr. Terry Mason, who led the health department in 2009, said the warehouse operations had closed in late 2008. The report says the warehouse wasn’t closed until two years later than Mason publicly claimed.
