A picnic honoring Mya Lyons will be held Sunday afternoon at the Cook County Forest Preserve at 91st Street and Prospect Square in remembrance of the third anniversary of her death.
The 9-year-old girl, who had been visiting her father Richard Lyons for the summer, was found by her father in an alley July 14, 2008 about a half block from his home in the 8400 block of South Gilbert Court.
Mya suffered blunt force trauma, suffocation and was stabbed more than 30 times, prosecutors said.
Lyons was charged in January with first-degree murder and is held without bail. He was also charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse in an unrelated case stemming from an alleged incident in June 2010 involving a 15-year-old boy; he’s being held on a $250,000 bond on the sex charge.
He maintained his innocence on both charges.
