Redefining Thanksgiving: New Traditions in Black Households

Thanksgiving is rich in tradition, but its celebration is changing, especially in Black households. While many families continue to honor old customs, others are creating new ways to celebrate due to shifting family dynamics. This blend of old-school and new-school celebrations highlights the resilience of our communities.

The Historical Significance of Thanksgiving in Black Culture

Thanksgiving has long served as a reminder of strength and cultural heritage in Black communities. Originally symbolizing survival and unity, it has evolved into a celebration of family, food and faith. For many, it’s a time to honor ancestors and strengthen community bonds. This gathering also provides an opportunity to reflect on the resilience of Black people throughout history and the ongoing pursuit of justice and equality.

Honoring Our Ancestors

Traditions often include prayers and expressions of gratitude, focusing on family recipes passed down through the generations. For decades, many families have taken turns around the dinner table where each member shares what they are thankful for. We also honor our ancestors by acknowledging their contributions and upholding cherished traditions.

“My mother made homemade yeast rolls every Thanksgiving morning, and I’ve kept that tradition alive. It honors her legacy and brings our family together,” says Erika Jones Purvis, Owner of the EJP Lifestyle brand.

Challenges to Tradition

Today, many families struggle to maintain these traditions due to relocation, blended families, and financial issues. High divorce rates, separations and untimely deaths can lead to feelings of loneliness, particularly when witnessing others celebrate with large families.

“I often feel down when I see others enjoying family time. To cope, I invite friends over for what I call Friendsgiving. It’s my way of building new traditions,” says Zeela Wilkins, a widow, business owner and mother of three.

New Traditions for Connection

In response to these challenges, many millennials and Gen Xers create new traditions focused on connection and community. Friendsgiving—an informal celebration where friends share a meal—has become popular as it showcases diverse cultural backgrounds.

“Hosting Friendsgiving meant a lot to me this year. I wanted to create something special for the people I cherish,” shares Tameka Grant, Founder of Sassy Thrifters. “It was a joy to host Friendsgiving day at Maison Blanc Noir, a Black-owned Airbnb. The day was filled with laughter, delicious food and love.”

The Rise of ‘Friendsgiving’

Friendsgiving provides a supportive atmosphere filled with gratitude, often inspired by ideas shared on social media. Some families enjoy community potlucks or meals featuring different cuisines. They engage in bonding activities like board games or volunteering.

“Volunteering at Two Fish Restaurant on Thanksgiving is important to my family. It reminds us of the true spirit of the holiday—giving back,” says Alisha Marie Rayford, a Diverse Learning Educator.

Embracing Change and Building Community

As family dynamics change, the meaning of Thanksgiving evolves.

New traditions like Friendsgiving and community service offer fresh opportunities for connection. By embracing these changes, we honor our past while creating new memories.

Thanksgiving remains a time for gratitude and togetherness—whether with family or friends. Each gathering reflects our strength and adaptability. By celebrating in diverse ways, we honor those who came before us and pave the way for future generations.

Looking Forward: The Future of Thanksgiving Celebrations

The Thanksgiving ritual will continue to evolve, emphasizing inclusivity and community-building. Families will find ways to gather that resonate with their unique stories.

As Erika Jones notes, “Thanksgiving reminds us of the importance of love and fellowship.”

The Power of Storytelling

Sharing personal stories becomes vital to the celebration, enriching the experience and fostering understanding.

“My grandmother shared tales of her youth during Thanksgiving dinner. Now, I encourage my children to share their stories,” said Kristopher Spann, a father.

Celebrating Resilience

No matter what we endure, the spirit of resilience shines through in how we celebrate Thanksgiving.

From Friendsgiving to community service, these traditions embody a collective strength that honors our roots while embracing change.

As we gather this holiday season, let’s celebrate our diverse cultures and nurture our connections. Thanksgiving reflects who we are and how we value relationships.

In this time of gratitude, let’s embrace the many ways to celebrate, ensuring the spirit of Thanksgiving lives on. Whether through shared meals, acts of kindness or simply being present, we shape this holiday into a meaningful celebration.

Thanksgiving is not just a day; it’s an ongoing invitation to honor, connect and uplift each other.
