SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn is set to name a new head of the Illinois Department of Corrections on Thursday. Quinn is scheduled to announce the new chief at a press conference in Springfield. He hasn’t said why he’s making the appointment. The corrections department has been run by former Macon County Sheriff Roger E. Walker Jr. since 2003. Walker was appointed by ousted Gov. Rod Blagojevich, but Quinn has kept other holdovers from the former administration in place. The governor has called for an examination of procedures at the Tamms Correctional Center. Some question the long hours inmates spend in solitary confinement at the Alexander County prison. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
