Gov. Pat Quinn wants the endorsement of Cook County Democrats in his bid for a full term, but challenger Dan Hynes urged party officials not to give their backing to any candidate.

Gov. Pat Quinn wants the endorsement of Cook County Democrats in his bid for a full term, but challenger Dan Hynes urged party officials not to give their backing to any candidate. Hynes told party officials Friday that he wanted an open primary with no official backing for one candidate. Hynes is Illinois’ comptroller. Quinn, however, says he’d be happy to have the endorsement of the Cook Democrats, one of the major voting blocs in the state. In his speech, Quinn reminded leaders about the tough situation he inherited when he became governor. Quinn replaced ousted Gov. Rod Blagojevich in January after lawmakers removed Blagojevich after his arrest on federal corruption charges. County Democratic leaders met in Chicago to slate candidates for the 2010 election. A third candidate, Bill "Dock" Walls, is also seeking the Democratic nomination for governor. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
