The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is letting people know about a new law that lets landowners use purple paint on trees and posts to warn people about trespassing. The law doesn’t apply in Chicago.
But landowners can’t stop posting "no trespassing" signs just yet. Until Jan. 1, 2013, property owners using purple marks still need to give the "no trespassing" warning on a sign at the main entrance to their property or in some other written or spoken way.
The purple markings that mean "no trespassing" are vertical lines at least 8-inches long and colored post caps.
People who trespass can be charged with a misdemeanor.
