The road to a berth in the 2008 Prep Bowl at Soldier Field next month gets underway today with the start of the Public League playoffs.

A full slate of games are scheduled for today through Saturday. Among those looking to make a statement in the playoffs will be Simeon, which finished the regular season with impressive victories over Morgan Park and CVS.

The Wolverines will face Gwendolyn Brooks in a first round contest Thursday at Gately Stadium.

Also Thursday, top-seeded Hubbard takes on Orr.

“You want to be playing your best football when the playoffs arrive, and we feel we are doing that,” said Simeon head coach Jesse Chick.

Leading the way for the Wolverines is running back Krystal Jackson.

In the big win over Morgan Park, he rushed for three scores, and in last weekend’s 30-0 victory over CVS, he scored four times.

A converted defensive end, Jackson moved into the backfield when the starting running back was injured.

“He’s done an outstanding job for us,” Chick said of Jackson. “After playing mostly defense for us, it has taken him awhile to get reaclimated to the running position, but he has done that.”

In addition to the Brooks-Simeon clash, other key first round games Thursday will find Whitney Young taking on Julian, Crane hosting Corliss, Robeson entertaining Hyde Park and Steinmetz meeting Marshall.

In key games Friday, Morgan Park bangs helmets with Harper, CVS faces Harlan and Amundsen huddles up against Lane.

Among the first round games Saturday will be Foreman busing to Dunbar.
