Precious film, stars, director up for Academy Awards Defender Staff Report The Academy Award nominations were announced Tuesday. Among the nominees, Gabourey Sidibe is up for a best actress award for her role in the gritty film Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ By Sapphire. Mo’nique, who co-starred in the movie as the lead character’s mother, is up for a best supporting actress award. The riveting film is also up for a best picture award, along with Lee Daniels, who’s nominated for directing it. “After 82 years, it’s the first film nominated for best picture directed by an African American. Isn’t that great? It’s so exciting. How can you lose? You can’t lose!” said Daniels. He is only the second Black director nominated for an Academy Award. Morgan Freeman, who portrays Nelson Mandela in the film Invictus is looking to pick up a best actor award when the Oscars are passed out. “This is my fifth nomination and I’m more proud of that than all the rest of it, I think. Getting nominated, to me, that’s the plateau. After you’re nominated, it’s like a crap shoot, it’s like throwing dice,” Freeman said of his nomination. The Academy Awards air live March 7.
