Potts now undecided about self-representation

The former lover of Nailah Franklin told a Cook County Circuit Court judge Friday he may, once again, have legal representation in his murder trial that has yet to be scheduled.

Reginald Potts was ordered held without bond last December for allegedly murdering his 28-year-old ex-girlfriend in September 2007. He is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, vehicular hijacking and robbery in connection with the pharmaceutical sales representative’s death.

Potts told Judge Thomas V. Gainer Jr. that his family is "in contact with other attorneys."

The judge said the matter could be discussed further at Potts’ next court hearing.

Last month, Potts told the judge that he could no longer afford his former attorney Robert Johnson and declined to be represented by a public defender. He said he has been studying in the jail’s law library and preferred to represent himself.

Franklin was reported missing Sept. 19, 2007 after calls to her family and friends were not returned by her and when she missed an important meeting with her boss the previous day.

Within two weeks of her disappearance, her car, personal belongings and decomposed body were found a few miles apart in the south suburbs and neighboring Hammond, Ind.

Prosecutors, who are seeking the death penalty against Potts, said he stalked Franklin within days of her disappearance, and video footage shows him on Sept. 18 inside the building where Franklin lived. ______ Copyright 2008 Chicago Defender.
