Polished Pebbles Girl Mentoring Program Hosts “Together She Will SHINE” Reception Featuring Guest Emcee Consuella from V103 Polished Pebbles celebrates their 6th year of providing mentoring programs and services to girls ages 7-17 at its “Together She Will SHINE” Fundraiser Reception to commemorate its programs and services provided to girls all over the Chicagoland and surrounding areas. Through their impactful work, they help girls become great communicators at home, school and in the future workplace. The reception will take place today Thursday, September 17th from 6p-9p at the historic Parkway Ballroom located at 4455 S. King Drive. The event promises to exhilerating. V103’s Consuella will emcee the program and fill the evening with live music and big announcements. Cocktail attire is required. Tickets may still be available if you choose to go and contributions are accepted.
Polished Pebbles will recognize ladies of distinction, who have made major contributors to the growth of the program over the past year. Those acknolwedged are Education Partner of the Year, Christa Hamilton of Center for New Horizons; Community Partners of the Year including 4th Ward Alderman Pat Dowell, 5th Ward Alderman Leslie Hairston and Wendy Williams of SECC. The Our SHINE Award recipient is Morgan Williams of Citizens School and the Woman of the Year Award will be presented to Dionne Rainey of ThoughtWorks. Since Polished Pebbles inception, the program has worked with over 1,200 girls, with the help of over 500 mentors through local partnerships at more than 40 public & charter schools, and public housing communities. Statistics have shown that after participating, 100% of the girls report improved abilities in conflict resolution and anger management, and that 87% go on to join other groups in schools, churches, and communities, and that 94% of them obtain leadership positions in those groups. Polished Pebbles Mentee Deneen Borner had the memorable opportunity to introduce First Lady Michelle Obama during the 2011 National Mentoring Summit at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. After Deneen’s articulate and confident introduction, the First Lady stated “well there you go… and that’s what the south side of Chicago produces.” The Polished Pebbles program has been featured in the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, Jet Magazine, and aired on CBS-Chicago and WTTW. Documentation reports that the program has reached 300,000 kids, 150,000 parents and 300,000 professionals. Polished Pebbles girls have completed Signature Career Mentoring Initiatives with Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, Microsoft, ThoughtWorks, Blue Cross Blue Shield of IL and The Chicago Sky. The program’s leadership takes pride in their AfterSchool and In-School Mentoring Program, as well as the Second Saturdays Mentoring Program. “After over five years of implementation, Polished Pebbles signature career mentoring initiatives include job shadow days and hands-on employment projects that are always points of high interest for our girls, and very coveted off-campus experiences.
