CHICAGO (AP) — Police departments in Chicago and many of its suburbs are stepping up enforcement efforts around railroad crossings as part of a safety effort. Officers will be issuing tickets Thursday morning to drivers and pedestrians who ignore rail crossing protections. The heightened enforcement will take place at rail crossings in Chicago, Bensenville, Elgin, Tinley Park, Oak Lawn, Mount Prospect, Des Plaines, Woodstock, Cary, Crystal Lake and Arlington Heights. It’s part of an international effort to prevent deaths and injuries at rail crossings by raising awareness. Forty-five countries are taking part in International Level Crossing Awareness Day.
