HARVEY, Ill. (AP) – A suburban Chicago police officer has been shot in an exchange of gunfire after responding to a call about a burglary in progress.
A suspected burglar is in a standoff with police Tuesday afternoon in the city of Harvey, about 25 miles south of Chicago.
City spokesman Sean Howard tells the Chicago Sun-Times a suspect is in a home and believed to be holding hostages. Howard says he doesn’t know how many hostages may be involved.
He says the officer was responding to a 911 call when he saw someone with a gun. Howard says “there was an exchange of gunfire, and the officer was shot.”
Howard says the officer was taken to a hospital. He did not give the officer’s condition, but told WLS-TV the officer’s arm was wounded.
