For the fourth time in the last 13 months, a Chicago police officer was killed. Thor Soderberg, 43, was shot in the head Wednesday during an altercation with a man in Englewood, police said, citing preliminary reports. The 11-year police veteran was at the end of his shift shortly before 4 p.m. when he was approached by a 24-year-old man in the parking lot of a police building in the 6100 block of South Racine Avenue. The man disarmed the officer, shot him in the head and attempted an armed robbery nearby, Asst. Supt. James Jackson said at a news conference at police headquarters. Officers in the building heard gunshots and fired at the suspect, injuring him, said Jackson. The suspect was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn; his injuries appeared to be non-life-threatening, he said. Soderberg was on a one-week deployment in the Englewood District, part of the Operation Protect Youth program. He is normally assigned to the training academy. The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the police-involved shooting. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday morning. Copyright 2010 Chicago Defender.
