CHICAGO   Police in Chicago say they’ve arrested the gunman who killed an off-duty police detective and a real estate agent during an apparent robbery last week. Chief of Detectives Thomas Byrne says 26-year-old Jason Austin was arrested at his home and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and armed robbery. Authorities contend Austin killed Detective Robert Soto and Kathryn Romberg, who were shot multiple times in an SUV outside her home on the city’s West Side. Romberg died at the scene Wednesday, and Soto died at a hospital Thursday. Soto was a 23-year department veteran. Authorities say he managed to call 911 after he was shot and later told authorities he’d been robbed and that three men had fled the scene. Police say their investigation is ongoing. ______ Copyright 2008 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
