A teenage boy is dead, and a north suburban police officer is wounded after a domestic fight Wednesday turned fatal. Waukegan police said they responded to a call at 17-year-old Jeffrey Lewis’ home in the 500 block of Helmholz Avenue at about 2:15 p.m., to break up a fight between Lewis and his older brother. The boy’s mother called the police after she failed to control the situation, police said. As officers tried to break up the squabble, Lewis allegedly hit one of the officers on the head with a hammer. Another officer then shot Lewis, according to Waukegan Police Chief Bill Biang. Lewis, who was set to begin his senior year at Waukegan High School and was on the football team, was pronounced dead on the scene. The officer was taken to Lake Forest Hospital with a skull fracture. ______ Copyright 2008 Chicago Defender. All rights reserved.
