Police-involved shooting kills one

An 18-year-old man was fatally shot by police Wednesday night after he allegedly opened fire near a grocery store in the South Shore neighborhood, shooting four people, police said.

An 18-year-old man was fatally shot by police Wednesday night after he allegedly opened fire near a grocery store in the South Shore neighborhood, shooting four people, police said. At about 7 p.m., Chicago Police officers heard gunshots in the 2100 block of East 71st Street and saw an armed man, Dashaun Winston, fleeing the area, police said. According to the police, officers chased him into an alley in the 7100 block of South Merrill Avenue and fatally shot Winston when he pointed his gun towards the officers. A weapon was recovered at the scene, said Mark Payne, a spokesperson for the Independent Police Review Authority. Two men, one woman and a teen were allegedly shot by Winston during the incident. All were in serious-to-critical condition at various hospitals, police said. It has not been determined what sparked the shooting, police said. ______ Copyright 2009 Chicago Defender.
