CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago officials say an earlier curfew for children younger than 12 has led to curfew citations for 168 children in that age group since it went into effect in mid-September. More than 2,000 young people 12 and older also have been cited for curfew violations during that time.
Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy says enforcing the curfew ordinance helps keep children safe. It’s part of Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the police superintendent’s public safety plan to reduce crime and violence.
The new curfew for children younger than 12 is 8:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
The curfew for children 12 to 16 years old remains 10 p.m. during the week and 11 p.m. on weekends.
