CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago authorities say an off-duty police commander has died after suffering a heart attack.

A statement from Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy says that John Kupczyk died Saturday evening.

Kupczyk served the Chicago Police Department for 28 years. He was most recently commander of the 8th District, which covers parts of the city’s southwest side and surrounds Midway International Airport.

McCarthy says Kupczyk exemplified excellent leadership and professionalism. He offered prayers to the family.
