CHICAGO (AP) — A playground on Chicago’s South Side is being dedicated to a police officer who was shot and killed last year.

On Saturday, the new playground at Cole Park in the city’s Chatham neighborhood will be formally named after Officer Thomas Wortham IV.

Wortham was killed on May 19, 2010, outside his parents’ home by men trying to steal a motorcycle he’d bought himself as a gift after his latest tour of duty overseas in the military.

The 30-year-old officer was active in his neighborhood and headed the park’s advisory board. Days before he was killed, Wortham was quoted in a local newspaper about his efforts to make the park near his parents’ home a safe haven from the violence that was beginning to plague the area.
